What is Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)?

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a security process that requires users to provide multiple forms of verification before gaining access to an applications ( Email Services, blackboard etc). Unlike traditional single-factor authentication, which typically relies on a password alone, MFA adds additional layers of security.

The idea behind MFA is that even if one factor (like a password) is compromised, the additional factors provide extra protection against unauthorized access. This makes it much harder for attackers to gain access to your accounts.

MFA Solution Deployed in QU

Microsoft MFA, the cloud-based service is currently being used to facilitate the second factor in our authentication process.

How can I enroll in for MFA?

QU members can enroll to Microsoft MFA by accessing the portal https://aka.ms/mfasetup. There are several methods available for you to enroll in:

Authenticator app / mobile app
Phone (text | call)
Alternate Phone (call)

To activate MFA you need to be enrolled in at least one of the above methods. ITS do highly recommend that you enroll in more than one method so that you have back-up / alternative options for signing in with MFA in case you need it.

Step to Enroll

Step 1

Open browser and navigate to https://aka.ms/mfasetup and Login using your QU provided user ID and password in format username@qu.edu.qa or username@student.qu.edu.qa account

After login you will be prompted for more information

Click Next to start the MFA enrolment process.

Step 4

Click Download now, that will give the option to install authenticator app on android and IOS phones, scan the QR code for installing the authenticator app.

After installing the authenticator app click Next

Scan the QR Code using the Mobile authenticator app

Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your device, click the + symbol to add an account, and select “Work or school account”
Choose “Scan QR code” and hover your device’s camera over the QR code displayed on your computer. Your QU account will then be added to the Microsoft Authenticator app.

Step 7

Click Next and you will be sent a Push Notification to your Authenticator app, prompting you to enter the numbers displayed on your screen.

Step 8

On your device, enter the displayed numbers and click Yes

Step 9

Once you see a success message on your computer, you have successfully set up Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication using the Microsoft Authenticator app.

Alternate Sign-in Options

QU recommends a minimum of two sign methods, Microsoft authenticator being the default one. This will help you in authenticating to QU MFA enabled applications in case of issue with authenticator application or in case of any issues with the phone.
